01 · THE RITUAL
Record a Tape is a free online mixtape maker for creating and sharing a digital cassette with someone. Pick a song, press REC, and record your mixtape one track at a time as the reels turn, the counter runs, and the handwritten label becomes your tracklist.
There is no playlist editor and no drag-and-drop queue. You choose each song when you are ready to record it, because the order is the message.

02 · HOW TO RECORD A TAPE
Making a mixtape with Record a Tape takes four steps: pick a song, press REC, continue recording one track at a time, then eject the finished cassette to share it.
Find the song that belongs at the beginning: the one that reminds you of them.
The reels start turning, the counter runs, and the song is recorded onto your cassette.
One song at a time, the handwritten label becomes your tracklist.
When the tape is done, eject it. The cassette is the gift.
03 · WHY MIXTAPES
A playlist is primarily a collection of songs for convenient listening. A mixtape is deliberately ordered for a particular person, mood, or moment: its beginning, middle, and ending are part of the message.
A PLAYLIST IS CONVENIENT.
A MIXTAPE IS
INTENTIONAL.
A playlist is a collection. A mixtape has a beginning, a middle, and an ending: the first song introduces it, the middle carries the memory, and the last song gets the final word.
That is why making a mixtape takes a little longer. You are not filling a queue. You are deciding what comes next, for one particular person.
04 · FOR SOMEONE
Record the songs that make the distance feel a little smaller.

MAKE THIS TAPE →05 · THE MANUAL
A digital mixtape is a collection of songs chosen and arranged for one particular person, much like a mixtape recorded onto a cassette. The difference is that you can make and share it online without a physical tape deck. The songs, their order, and the message behind them are still yours to choose.
Choose a song, press REC, and let it record onto the virtual cassette. Add each track one at a time in the order you want them to be heard. When your tape is finished, press EJECT to take it out of the deck and share it with someone. For the complete process, read how to make a mixtape.
Yes. Record a Tape is a free online mixtape maker, and you do not need to create an account to start recording. Open the cassette deck, choose your songs, record your tape, and send the finished mixtape to someone.
No. The cassette deck lives entirely in your browser. Record a Tape recreates the experience of making a cassette mixtape online, including the REC button, turning reels, track order, and the handwritten label, without requiring a tape recorder or a blank cassette.
Yes. That is what Record a Tape is made for. When you finish recording, press EJECT and your cassette becomes a mixtape you can send to someone. They can open the tape in their browser and listen to the songs in the order you recorded them.
A playlist is usually built for convenient listening and can be edited or reordered at any time. A mixtape is more deliberate: you choose the songs, their sequence, and the person you are making it for. On Record a Tape, songs are recorded one at a time because the order is part of the message.
Traditional cassette tapes have two playable sides. Side A begins the mixtape, while Side B continues it after the cassette is flipped over. Record a Tape keeps that ritual: your tape is Side A, recorded one song at a time.
There is no perfect number. A good mixtape should feel intentional rather than simply long. Choose enough songs to tell the story, set the mood, or say what you want to say without adding tracks just to fill space. A shorter and carefully ordered selection can feel more personal than a huge playlist.
Absolutely. A mixtape can be made for a birthday, an anniversary, a long-distance relationship, a close friend, a road trip, or simply because a song reminded you of someone. What matters is not the occasion but why you chose those particular songs for that particular person. Ready to record one? Make a tape.
