THE FINE PRINT

Terms of Use

The short version

Record a Tape is a free browser-based mixtape maker. Your tape is encoded into the link you share and is not stored by Record a Tape. Anyone with the link may be able to open it, so avoid including information you would not want the recipient to see.

About the service

Record a Tape is a free browser-based mixtape maker that recreates the experience of recording a cassette for one specific person. Songs are recorded as short preview clips delivered by Apple's iTunes Search API, 30 seconds at a time, onto a virtual cassette. The finished tape is encoded into a share link that opens in any modern browser.

The service is provided as-is and may change, gain features, lose features, or become unavailable at any time. It is a side project built with care, not a contracted product.

Eligibility and accounts

There are no accounts. Anyone with a browser can make a tape. If you use Record a Tape while younger than the digital age of consent in your country, you should have permission from a parent or guardian, because the internet is a place.

Your tapes and content

A tape is contained within the link you create and share. You choose the songs, the order, and the label text. You are responsible for what you choose to include and for sharing the link appropriately. Anyone who receives that link may be able to access it, so treat the link like a letter: address it deliberately.

You confirm that your use of the service, including label text you write, will not contain anything unlawful, hateful, harassing, or infringing. Since tapes are not stored on any server, we cannot moderate them; if a link concerns you, contact us through the contact page and we will help however we reasonably can.

Music rights

Record a Tape does not host, store, or own any music. Song previews are provided through third-party services (the iTunes Search API) and stream directly from Apple's infrastructure to the listener. All music remains the property of its respective rights holders. Preview availability is controlled by those rights holders and may change without notice; a tape whose songs lose their previews may stop playing. That is the trade-off of storing a tape in a link instead of a vault.

Acceptable use

Do not use Record a Tape to harass anyone, to distribute unlawful content through labels or links, to scrape the iTunes API aggressively, or to build anything automated on top of the service without asking first. Do be excellent to each other. Tapes are letters, and letters have etiquette.

Analytics

Record a Tape uses Google Analytics 4 to understand how the site is used, such as when recording begins or a tape is completed. We do not intentionally send song titles, artist names, or tape contents to analytics. See the privacy policy for the full data breakdown.

Disclaimer and liability

The service is provided without warranties of any kind, express or implied, to the maximum extent permitted by law. To the maximum extent permitted by law, Record a Tape and its creator are not liable for any indirect or consequential damages arising from use of the service. If a tape link breaks because a song preview disappeared from the iTunes catalog, we are sorry, but that risk is inherent to storing a mixtape inside a link.

Changes to these terms

These terms may change as the service evolves. Material changes will update the date below. Continuing to use the service after a change means you accept the updated terms.

Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of Hong Kong SAR, without regard to conflict of law provisions.
