IDEAS · ANNIVERSARY
The anniversary tape: your story, in track order
An anniversary tape is the easiest tape to start and the hardest to order. Easy, because the song list already exists: it is your relationship. Hard, because once you have ten candidate songs, the tape is really asking one question: which chapters of this story make the cut, and in what order?
Structure it like the story, not like a greatest hits
The temptation is to stack your favorite love songs back to back. Resist it. A tape that is twelve perfect love songs is a mood; a tape with a shape is a narrative. Three acts:
- Act 1 · Before you. One or two songs from life before the relationship. They set the baseline that makes everything after land.
- Act 2 · The beginning. The first-dance song, the concert, the song that was secretly theirs. These carry the largest emotional charge; place them with care.
- Act 3 · Right now. Close with a song that means the present tense, and end on something that points at the future anniversary.
Cutting ten songs to five
Capacity is five tracks per side, and the constraint is a gift. The test for each candidate: does this song mark a chapter, or does it just belong to a good month? Chapters stay. Months wait for next year's tape. An anniversary tape that gets an annual sequel is worth ten perfect compilations.
The label is the dedication
Write it like you would sign a card: the date you met, "YEAR THREE", a nickname nobody else uses. If the tape is a letter you can hear, the label is the envelope. Keep it in your own handwriting, on purpose, every year.
The exchange ritual
The strongest version: you each make one tape, and you play them for each other on the night. Two decks, two tapes, one evening. The songs you each chose for the same story will not fully overlap, and the overlap is the part you will talk about for years.
If you are new to the deck, the complete walkthrough covers every key. For the deeper principle behind ordering songs on purpose, read mixtape versus playlist.
